I saw "Cats" starring Judi Dench-Murder on the Orient Express_2017, the Bond movies; Idris Elba-Fast & Furious Presents:Hobbs & Shaw, Ghost Rider:Spirit of Vengeance; Jennifer Hudson-Empire_tv, The Three Stooges_2012 and introducing Francesca Hayward-a principal ballerina at the Royal Ballet.
This movie is based on the stage musical that was based on a book by T.S. Eliot called 'Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. The music is by Andrew Lloyd Webber and he wrote some new songs just for the movie. I am not a big musical fan-I do like some of them-so if you are, you might like this movie more than I did. It has a great cast, with cameos by Rebel Wilson, Ian McKellen, James Corden and Taylor Swift. All the actors went to cat school to learn how to move & act like a cat. I have never seen the Broadway play, but of course, I have heard about it and was expecting to like it. I didn't. Francesca plays an abandoned cat that gets dropped off in a cat neighborhood-it's inhabited by lots of cats. Judi is the ringleader of a group of cats called Jellicles. Once a year, she will pick one deserving cat to ascend to a place called Heavenside Layer-they actually fly up in a balloon into the sky-and then come back to a new Jellicle life. Get it? Heaven & Angelical. Idris plays the villainous cat that thinks he deserves to be chosen by Judi-but she refuses. Jennifer plays another cat that is down on her luck-she wears tattered clothes and skulks around in alleys a lot. You could tell that they put a lot into this movie-especially Francesca-but it just didn't come out right to make me enjoy it. In my theater, there were people that got up & left.
It's rated "PG" for rude and suggestive humor and has a running time of 1 hour & 50 minutes.
I wouldn't buy this on DVD or rent it, either. If you are a fan of Cats-or musicals in general-you might like it more than I did. Otherwise, I would wait until it comes to cable.
